This should have made the National Headlines
May 17th, 2012

It’s funny how some things make the national mainstream press (like ‘don’t eat red meat’ and ‘eat low fat to be healthy’) and some things don’t…!? (I don’t want to appear like one of those conspiracy theorists but it does sometime seem as though the powers that be don’t want us to know the real truth about health & weight loss etc…)

Well, at least at Easyfit we want to make this mainstream.  It’s a great article written on The Daily Mail online.  It backs up what we have been educating our clients about for years but there seems to be more and more people realising that a lot of the old advice is untrue… Click here to read the article in full.  If you are reaching middle age or fall into that particular age category you really need to have a look.

Now make a list of all the things you’re grateful for.

Call someone and thank them for something.

Email someone and thank them for something.

An attitude of gratitude keep the flow of good coming your way as well as helping you make and find your own miracles too.

Can I use over-the-counter pills for weight loss?
May 8th, 2012

You can, yes! BUT, they won’t work….

Diet pills hardly ever result in permanent weight loss with the user being perfectly happy with their body shape!  If that was the case then everybody would be taking them, there would be no side effects and a lot less people overweight or obese!  It’s simple the best way to change your body shape and lose weight is the ‘highly complex formula’ correct nutritional guidelines (although easier said than done in this day and age), high quality supplementation and plenty of the right kind of exercise.  Using over-the-counter weight loss drugs is a short-term solution to a long-term problem and short-term ‘fixes’ to most long terms problems will never work.  It would be far more prudent to save the cash and spend it on healthy nutritious foods that are actually going to make a difference short and long term.  It is key to get your mind and body working n sync with each other to get the desired result.   Take control of your hormone, which means you will be in control of your hunger and appetite, instead of letting them control you.  Avoid relying on weight loss supplements that are often useless, often have no scientific proof of effectiveness, and can have some unwanted nasty side effects.

Pretty much every expert agrees (of which easyfit has an abundance of!), the best way to lose weight is to get regular physical activity and eat meals made up of foods that satisfy hunger and control appetite.  Including a source of lean protein at all meals and snacks along with high fibre fruit and vegetables would be far more effective for your health.

Do I need to eat more fibre?
May 6th, 2012

The Simple answer to this is YES!  These days adults eat an average of about 7-10grams(some people a lot less) and should be eating 25-38 grams per day. There are two basic types of fiber, soluble and insoluble.  Insoluble fiber, found in some whole grains, nuts, fruits, and vegetables, adds bulk to your diet and aids in normal bowel movements.  Soluble fiber, found in, beans, peas, apples, blueberries, dates, and pears, has been shown to lower cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of heart disease.

To increase your intake of dietary fiber, start by reading labels and choosing foods that have a good few grams of fiber per serving.  Kick-start your day a load of green leafy vegtebales and/or  top it with fresh fruit (along with your Protein of course, but this is a fibre question!) At lunch, add veggies to your meal or select a salad and top with raw veggies, beans, and nuts. Enjoy whole grains (if you are at your body fat goal…!) at dinner , such as brown rice, quinoa or a sweet potato  along with more fruit and vegetables. Be sure to drink plenty of water while increasing your fiber intake to minimize any gastrointestinal discomfort.  It may be wise to supplement your diet with flax seeds,  psyllium husks or a high quality fibre supplement such as TNT or LOCO to get an extra helping hand when it comes to the fibre question.

The bottom line is – EAT MORE FIBRE.  This will aid fat loss, boost health and energy levels in a very short space of time.  If you are not sure where to get a high quality supplement we use pysllium husks and TNT which can be found here.

Looking Good…Posture, Weight Training and Personal Trainers
May 5th, 2012

BY Sam Kelvey – Easyfit Personal Trainer, Congleton and Strength & Conditioning expert.

If there’s one thing guaranteed to make a competent personal trainer (and their well-educated client) cringe, it’s the site of another trainer teaching their (unfortunate) client to do heavy squats with the posture of a whippet have a ****!.  They might pull out every shiny new exercise to try and look good, but what good is that if they send people home with herniated discs?! Worryingly this does happen!

Good trainers know the importance of doing the basics well, and know what looks like simple exercises can cause the most damage if done improperly –  squats and deadlifts are the best examples.   Simple movements on the face of it, but easy to get wrong, or prescribe to the wrong person.

The easiest way of improving things is to be aware of your spine. There are a lot of points of view surrounding the exact do’s and don’ts of your back, but the simple truth that every sensible trainer will agree on is this –

Your spine is not meant for creating huge ranges of movement

Yes, it does and will move, but It is mainly there for support. The muscles surrounding your spine act like your own in-built spinal board, and your ‘core’ is your in-built weightlifting belt, so make use of them! There are some great examples in nature of brilliant posture –

How do Gorillas move about?

How do babies move and pick things up?

Copy them! Nobody looks at an old lady with a huge curve in her upper back and thinks “YES! That’s the posture I want!” unless you are the aforementioned whippet. Any trainer teaching others to lift like that is not to be trusted! Now I’ve mentioned it, have a look at ‘weightlifters’ posture in the gym.  I’ll bet not many of them are standing and lifting like the gorillas they think they are! This applies from the heavy stuff like squats and deadlifts, right down to the humble, and arguably pointless, bicep curl.

Not only could it break you, but performance-wise even small discrepancies can impair your strength. Lifting with your trunk already flexed reduces strength by over 13%, whilst putting huge forces on vertebral discs. Health, performance, strength and most importantly, results suffer. And that’s really what you’re in the gym for, isn’t it? Results. Achieving what you want, without sacrificing your own physical well-being.

Are the British Dietetic Association for Real?
April 26th, 2012

Wow…I am amazed! The British Dietetic Association (BDA) really have confirmed what I always thought of them.  I will try to keep this shorter than my usual rant but this is the original article (or ‘fact’ sheet as they call it) they wrote  about sugar-click here.

In case you didn’t read it here are the take away points (followed by my opinion!) that they so eloquently educate the nation with:

1) sugar isn’t bad for you, it’s an important source of carbohydrates. Also, it adds flavour and texture to food.

WHAT?  there is a huge amount of evidence to suggest sugar most definitely IS bad for you.  Just look around you!  Just look at the stats of sugar consumption over the last 30-40years and the massively  correlated obesity epidemic.  Doesn’t take that much research to find absolutely loads of data, articles, reviews, journals and books telling us that sugar is a killer.  Plus, if you reduce peoples sugar intake, they will lose weight and improve pretty much every health marker you can measure. And, you feel a lot better!!!

2) There is no direct health problems associated with sugar apart from tooth decay.

Urm…maybe they need to come out of their bubbles and do a little more reading…there is more and more research now on the dangers of sugar, the toxic effect of sugar, the links to diabetes, metabolic syndrome (a precursor to diabetes), insulin resistance and even some cancers now.  Although no-one wants it, tooth decay is the last thing we need to worry about about when it comes healths problems and sugar…!

(I may write about these three huge health subjects over the next few weeks as I promised you I wasn’t going to rant too much today).

3) Sugar doesn’t cause type 2 diabetes.

Technically, they could get away with this one by virtue of the fact that a direct causational link between sugar and diabetes has not been established (only a matter of time in my opinion though). BUT for nearly 100 years there have been links, studies and reviews concluding that sugar does have a direct impact on diabetes.  For example, Fredrick Banting (Nobel prize winner for discovering insulin) observed that diabetes was rare in populations who didn’t consume sugar and high in populations that did – THIS WAS IN 1923!

Also,  Haven Emerson, director of the institute of public health at Columbia University, showed that diabetes deaths in New York City had increased as much as 15-fold in 60 years (FROM 1865)  and that deaths increased as much as 4-fold in some U.S. cities between 1900 and 1920 alone.  This, amazingly coincides with a doubling of sugar consumption.

So, if we look back, there is only 90 years of research to trawl through, linking sugar with diabetes…! Not much then!

In my opinion it is the major cause of diabetes both indirectly (through making us overweight) and directly (by increasing insulin).

4) low calorie sweeteners aren’t bad for you

I beg to differ…! Dr Robert Walton looked at 166 studies related to aspartame (just one common sweetener).  Interestingly 74 of those studies were funded by Nutrasweet(who make aspartame), the rest were independently funded. 100% of the 74 studies funded by Nutrasweet concluded aspartame to be safe (surprise, surprise!).  Of the remaining studies 92% found significant health problems with aspartame! I could go on but suffice to say the evidence is overwhelming.  If you want to read more on this then DR HJ Roberts has written a 1000 page book on the health problems associated with sweetners called ASPARTAME DISEASE.   I might send a copy to the BDA?!

5) Sugar is not addictive

Yes it is (in my opinion)!  Again, a fairly well researched subject (a Princeton university study being one of the most widely known – although not to the BDA evidently!) with recent evidence showing that it is addictive in many levels – physiological, psychological & neurological.  Some  studies also show that it works on the same pathways as some class A drugs and when given a choice, rats (due to the brain alterations) actually preferred sugar as opposed to one the most addictive drugs in the world.

Plus, forget research for a second and just think about people on a daily basis.  There are plenty of sugar addicts around us.  You try stopping people getting a sugar fix when they have a craving…people will go to some lengths to get it if they have been denied it for a while.  Addictive behaviour…?

So there you have it,  a quite unbelievable article written by people who are supposed to helping the population.  I think it would be a good idea to do a research study on a member from this organisation and give them as much sugar as they want for a few years (or even just the amount they say if ‘safe’ which is a massive 15 teaspoons a day) and measure their  diabetes risk factors, insulin resistance levels, metabolic syndrome risk, fatty deposits in the liver, blood fat levels, cancer risk, psychological health, brain chemistry and neurological health.  What do you think?  Obviously, we would have to get the Sugar Association to fund it to make sure the results came out without any bias….!!!!!

I certainly wouldn’t volunteer as I will be consuming as little sugar as possible…
